Acanthamoeba species are among the most prevalent protozoans in the environment. They are commonly found in lakes, swimming pools, tap water, soil, sea water, sewage, contact lens equipment, vegetables, and heating and air conditioning units. A. culbertsoni is one of several species of Acanthamoeba which are implicated in human disease.
