Holistic pet/animal care can include tailored nutrition, chiropractic, energetic re-balancing – all that we would consider in caring for ourselves. While prevention is key, illnesses in dogs, cats, horses and our other mammal pets seem no less prevalent than in humans.
An increasing prevalence of allergies in animals mirrors that which we have seen in humans in western countries over the last 25 years. This ‘new normal’ for pets can include skin itching/hives, gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, vomiting), and upper respiratory reactivity (sneezing, itchy ears, ear infections, running eyes).
Allergens can include saliva from flea bites, foods, the environment (ie. hay and barn allergens for horses). The allergic pathways – immune system factors and the chemical cascade of the reaction – are the same for all mammals.
All mammals are programmed to respond with this ‘altered’ immune system defence under specific circumstances. Historically, dogs, guinea pigs and other mammals have been used as subjects in the study of allergy and anaphylaxis.
If we define an allergy as an evolved immune defence against acute toxicity, we might look for those toxins that would provoke the response. Once provoked, depending on type of allergy, what might be available for managing or changing the reactivity?
